Across NSW, hundreds of young people are stepping up, giving back and making a meaningful difference in their communities through the Vinnies Service Medallion (VSM).

The VSM is a youth recognition program that encourages and celebrates community service, social justice engagement and active citizenship. Open to secondary-aged students participating through their school or independently with an adult supervisor, the program provides a structured pathway for young people to serve their communities, support people experiencing disadvantage and develop a deeper understanding of social justice.

While still in its early stages, the VSM has already experienced significant growth. In 2025:

• More than 500 awards were presented to students in recognition of their service
• 95% of participants reported feeling that they had made a real impact
• More than 60 social justice initiatives were completed
• The first 27 Bronze Medallions were awarded
• 18 schools participated in the program

The momentum has continued into 2026. We now have 37 schools registered across NSW, representing every region of the state, and more than 400 students registered and participating in the program.

This growth presents a valuable opportunity to strengthen connections between schools, local Conferences and the broader St Vincent de Paul Society network. Many students are eager to contribute to their communities and learn more about the work of the Society. Through the strong relationships and partnerships they foster, Conferences play a vital role in helping young people understand the impact of service and the meaningful difference they can make in the lives of others.

The VSM is designed to complement and strengthen the important work already taking place across the Society. At its heart, the program shares the same mission that inspires our members every day: supporting people in need, standing alongside our communities and turning compassion into action. The young people participating in the VSM today are guided by the same values that have long shaped the Society.

As the program continues to grow, we would love to hear from Conferences and members interested in learning more. This could involve connecting with a local VSM school, strengthening an existing school partnership, hosting a presentation or helping an affiliated school become involved. Our team would be delighted to provide guidance and support.

Together, we have an opportunity to nurture the next generation of Vincentians and strengthen the spirit of service across NSW.
